Toronto-listed Aya Gold & Silver on Sunday reported that employees and contractors at its Zgounder silver mine, 100 km from Marrakech, were safe and that no injury was recorded at the mine.

The company issued a statement following the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the Al-Haouz province on Friday evening. More than 2 100 people have died in the quake.

“We are shocked and saddened by the loss of life caused by the earthquake and send our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the people of Morocco,” said president and CEO Benoit La Salle.

“Aya stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Morocco and continues to offer regional community assistance. Our health and operations teams were immediately mobilised and have been providing targeted support to the Taroudant area under the direction of local authorities since the disaster occurred.”

Aya noted that it had suspended production at Zgounder for 24 hours to facilitate a geotechnical assessment of the mine and its infrastructure. No infrastructure damage has been reported.
