Project Owner/s
Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) subsidiary Black Mountain Mining (BMM).

Project Description
This project will add a new product line, iron-ore (magnetite), to the BMM portfolio and is set to contribute significant financial benefits to the economy. 

The BMM plant tailings consist of an iron feed-grade of about 39%, which will be processed and converted into a world-class target grade of more than 68%. The new plant will produce 700 000 t/y of iron-ore.

The project is also a major environment, social and governance initiative for VZI and will reduce VZI’s overall future environmental footprint.

Potential Job Creation
The project is expected to create an estimated 400 jobs during the construction phase and 50 permanent jobs during the operations phase.

Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
R770-million.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is expected to be completed in the second half of the 2025/26 financial year.

Latest Developments
As at March 31, 2025, the project was 86% complete, with commercial and legal processes under way for finalisation.
