South African pioneer of proximity detection systems Booyco Electronics continues to play a pivotal role in the quest for zero harm in the mining sector. Acknowledged as a leader in the field, the company offers solutions for underground and surface mining which are a comprehensive and integrated response to Level 7, Level 8 and Level 9 safety levels for people and vehicle detection – as defined by the earthmoving equipment safety round table and adopted by the Minerals Council South Africa.

Leveraging its South African-based engineering and production facility as well as years of experience, Booyco Electronics has remained a leader in the use of very low frequency technology in underground mining. This technology allows signals to be transmitted through rock walls, facilitating vital communication between sensors on pedestrians and trackless mobile machinery (TMMs). This ensures pedestrians will still be warned of approaching vehicles, even if out of sight around the corner. Significantly, the Booyco Proximity Detection System (PDS) and Collision Prevention Systems (CPS) can detect as many as seven TMMs and 20 pedestrians within one scenario in the underground environment.

The company also has extensive experience in developing safety solutions using radio frequency and global positioning system technology for surface applications.

The system architecture for both its PDS and CPS can be easily expanded and adapted to new technological developments, and this is done through greater collaboration with vehicle and materials handling original equipment manufacturers.

The Booyco Electronics Asset Manage-ment System (BEAMS) is a software suite deployed at customers facilitating accurate reporting. BEAMS can integrate with a lamp room management system, or similar surface allocation and management system.
