Brockman Syncline 1 (BS1) mine project.

Brockman region in the West Pilbara of Western Australia.

Project Description
The BS1 project will extend the life of the Brockman region sustaining production from Rio Tinto’s iron-ore operations.

BS1 is one of a series of replacement projects, with a total yearly capacity of 130-million tonnes of iron-ore.

The project includes a new primary crusher and overland conveyor, a nonprocess infrastructure precinct and a temporary camp for construction workers.

Potential Job Creation
About 1 000 jobs will be created during construction. Once operational, BS1 will sustain a workforce of about 600.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
No details provided.

Capital Expenditure
$1.8-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
First ore is scheduled for 2027, having previously been anticipated in 2028.

Latest Developments
Engineering company Monadelphous Group has received a Notice of Award for a major construction contract with Rio Tinto associated with BS1.

The multidisciplinary contract is valued at about $250-million. It includes fabrication and supply, as well as detailed earthworks, concrete, structural, mechanical, piping and electrical and instrumentation works associated with the construction of a new primary crusher and overland conveyor. It also includes modifications to existing plant. Work under the contract will start immediately and is expected to be completed in 2027.
