Capstone’s Pinto Valley mine earns Copper Mark for responsible practices
Toronto- and Sydney-listed Capstone Copper said on Monday that its Pinto Valley mine in Arizona, US, has received The Copper Mark, an assurance framework that certifies responsible production practices in the copper industry.
The recognition makes Pinto Valley Capstone’s third site to receive the award, following its Mantoverde and Mantos Blancos mines in Chile in 2023.
Pinto Valley hosts the only operating mill in Arizona’s Globe-Miami district, one of the oldest and most productive copper mining regions in the US. Since its first recorded production in 1975, Pinto Valley has produced more than four-billion pounds of copper, including 500-million pounds of copper cathode.
The Copper Mark is based on 33 environmental, social and governance criteria and independently verifies whether copper production sites operate to responsible standards.
“I would like to congratulate our entire team on this esteemed milestone. Receipt of The Copper Mark at Pinto Valley is a testament of our commitment to transparency and responsible production,” Capstone CEO Cashel Meagher said in a statement.
Wendy King, Capstone’s senior VP risk, ESG and general counsel, said that the Copper Mark served as an advocate for transparency and accountability. "At Capstone we view The Copper Mark as an iterative process … We take pride in the achievements of our Pinto Valley and Chilean sites in receipt of The Copper Mark, and we actively strive to replicate this success at Cozamin, in Mexico.”
