In a significant move to enhance emergency response and community safety, gas pipeline company the Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Investments Company (Rompco) has donated a modern fire truck to the Elukwatini Fire Department in the Chief Albert Luthuli municipality, in Mpumalanga.

This initiative is part of Rompco’s corporate social investment efforts and underscores the company’s commitment to safeguarding lives and livelihoods.

“With the generous donation of R2.8-million, we as Rompco not only provided financial support to the Chief Albert Luthuli municipality, but we have provided surety and safety that people’s lives can be saved,” comments Rompco branding, communications and corporate social investment manager Chuma Mxo.

“The area is affected by veld fires, structural fires and accidents. Owing to the municipality’s financial constraints, we decided to heed the call and assist.”

The fire truck, equipped with “advanced technology”, also includes a five-year service and maintenance package, ensuring sustained operational efficiency. This donation significantly bolsters the capabilities of the Elukwatini Fire Department, enabling quicker and more effective responses to emergencies.

“The challenge for us as a municipality was that we were responding to the needs of residents with inadequate equipment,” says Chief Albert Luthuli municipality chief fire officer Godiraone Phetlu.

“Since receiving the fire truck, we have been able to respond more effectively and efficiently, assisting affected areas in the community.” A recent fire incident highlighted the impact of this donation. A blaze broke out at a local bed-and-breakfast, threatening nearby structures. “We had a guesthouse fire involving rondavels and managed to save two owing to our prompt response,” says Phetlu.

By investing in firefighting resources, Rompco is making a direct impact on local businesses and homes, ensuring that valuable assets are protected. This initiative not only mitigates fire-related incidents but also fosters job opportunities and training for community members.

“We are committed to building safer communities, one initiative at a time,” comments Mxo, adding that, with Rompco’s support, the Chief Albert Luthuli municipality is better equipped to protect its residents and infrastructure, reinforcing a future where safety and security remain paramount.
