The decision of the African Development Bank to launch a $500-million initiative to assist African countries to transition to renewable energy is yet another example of the way banks the world over are enthusiastically offering to finance sun and wind energy projects. Governments, too, are unveiling climate change packages with alacrity and citizens are protesting in the streets about decarbonisation delays. Carbon taxes are being imposed and United Nations secretary-general António Guterres has called on countries to cease building coal-fired power stations after 2020.
