Name of the Project
GalliCam project.

Location
France.

Project Owner/s
Multinational mining company Sibanye-Stillwater.

Project Description
The project is being considered as a viable economic alternative to Sibanye-Stillwater’s Sandouville nickel refinery, in France, which will cease production of nickel metals and salts during the first half of 2025.

The project proposes to repurpose much of Sandouville’s existing processing circuit from its current product mix of nickel metals and salts into one of Europe’s first precursor cathode active material (pCAM) producers, with an initial pCAM production of up to 10 000 t/y of contained nickel.

The process, a proprietary intellectual property of Sibanye-Stillwater, uses a chloride medium that has several potential advantages, compared with that of conventional pCAM manufacturing processes.

Potential Job Creation
Not disclosed.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Sibanye-Stillwater is continuing to actively engage with French and European authorities regarding future financial support for the development of the GalliCam project which, pending the outcome of the feasibility studies, would enhance its commercial viability.

Planned Start/End Date
Pending the outcome of a prefeasibility study and the necessary approvals being secured, alteration of the refinery could start in 2026, and Cam production in 2027.

Latest Developments
The European Commission has designated the GalliCam project as a strategic project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). The CRMA aims to ensure that European extraction, processing and recycling of strategic raw materials meet 10%, 40% and 25% respectively of the EU's demand by 2030.

The PFS on the project is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
