The number of mobile subscriptions globally has reached nearly 8.7-billion, after 60-million subscriptions were added during the second quarter of this year, with global mobile subscription penetration now at 107%.

According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report second-quarter update, China accounted for the most net additions, at 22-million, followed by India, with eight- million, and Bangladesh, with two-million.

The number of mobile broadband subscriptions increased by about 100-million to reach 7.7-billion, which represents a year-on-year increase of 5%, and now accounts for 89% of all mobile subscriptions.

During the quarter under review, 5G subscriptions exceeded 1.9-billion, having increased by 161-million subscriptions, and now account for 22% of all mobile subscriptions.

Ericsson notes that 320 communications service providers have launched commercial 5G services and over 60 have deployed or launched 5G standalone networks.

Meanwhile, 4G subscriptions, which account for about 60% of all mobile subscriptions, experienced a 25-million reduction to 5.2-million subscribers during the second quarter, as subscribers continue to migrate to 5G.

WCDMA/HSPA subscriptions declined by 34-million and GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions declined by 41-million during the quarter under review.

Meanwhile, mobile network data traffic increased by 28 EB a month over the past year to reach 151 EB a month by the second quarter of the year.

The net addition of mobile data traffic represents a 23% year-on-year growth rate and a 4% quarter-on-quarter growth rate.

According to the report, long-term traffic growth is driven by continued strong uptake of smartphone subscriptions, migration to 4G and 5G subscriptions and an increasing average data volume for each subscription, fuelled by data-intensive services such as video.

However, large differences in traffic levels between markets, regions and service providers remain.
