Haultrax Brings SIC capability to Remote WA Mine with Starlink First
This article has been supplied.
In an Australian industry first, Haultrax has successfully deployed its Fleet Management System (FMS) at a remote Western Australian gold project managed by Iron Mine Contracting (IMC), using Vocus Satellite – Starlink to enable real-time operational data reporting.
With no fixed network and limited mobile coverage on site, IMC sought a solution that could digitise production tracking without requiring major investment in infrastructure or disrupting day-to-day operations. The result is a pioneering deployment that redefines connectivity and data management in some of the most challenging mining environments.
Enabling SIC reporting in the Most Challenging Conditions
Haultrax was engaged to deploy its lightweight Fleet Management System to deliver real-time production data.
Specifically designed for remote, infrastructure-limited operations, the system supports rapid deployment and enables Short Interval Control (SIC) reporting—giving supervisors and teams the ability to make fast, informed decisions.
Connectivity, however, posed a major challenge. With no 4G coverage and operations split between two satellite pits—North and South—over four kilometers apart, traditional communication networks weren’t an option. Equipment was constantly moving between pits, and with limited technical resources on site, the solution had to be simple to deploy, mobile, and robust enough to keep data flowing without fixed infrastructure.
A First-of-Its-Kind Solution
To overcome these challenges, Haultrax introduced an innovative approach by mounting Vocus Satellite – Starlink directly onto key mobile assets. Three excavators, two Komatsu PC2000 and a PC1250, were fitted with magnet-mounted Starlink terminals, transforming them into mobile communication hubs broadcasting local Wi-Fi networks around themselves to provide data connectivity for the fleet.
The haul trucks operating across the site are equipped with onboard Wi-Fi, allowing them to capture and store data throughout the cycle. Each time a truck returns to one of the excavators—where it pauses for loading—it reconnects to the network and automatically uploads its stored data. This setup ensures consistent production reporting and eliminates the need for communications trailers to be moved around the site.
This innovation significantly reduces upfront capital expenditure. Connectivity is delivered via a simple monthly Starlink subscription, avoiding the need for fixed towers or high-cost mobile infrastructure. Importantly, the system is easy to scale or relocate as site conditions change.
Putting the Customer at the Centre
Haultrax not only recommended Starlink as a mobile connectivity option but also facilitated the delivery of an industrial-grade version through collaboration with Vocus. The result is a mining-ready, robust communication solution that eliminates the logistical headache of managing site-wide coverage through static infrastructure.
This first-of-its-kind rollout reflects Haultrax’s broader mission: to challenge traditional mining practices and enable real, practical transformation through operational technology. With a focus on working alongside clients to deliver fit-for-purpose solutions, Haultrax continues to redefine how modern mining technology can be deployed—quickly, cost-effectively, and delivering value from day one.
At the core of Haultrax’s approach is a commitment to working closely with our clients. Our success is our client’s success—and we partnered with Iron Mine Contracting to ensure the right solution was delivered for their needs.
