With elections looming, the governing party is unlikely to want to pull in its spending horns. However, the National Treasury is warning that it needs to do just that to avoid a looming debt crisis. In a letter seen by Sunday Times, the department outlined several drastic spending reduction steps in response to a weaker revenue outlook, precipitated largely by loadshedding and the collapse in freight logistics services.
