Kangra delivers ambulance to Mpumalanga government

A much-needed live-saving vehicle that will reduce emergency response time in Mkhondo was handed over to the Mpumalanga Department of Health on Tuesday, 21 January 2025.
Fitted with standard medical equipment, the ambulance will serve communities under the Mkhondo local municipality. It is designed to provide relief for injured or sick residents who need urgent medical assistance while in transit to health facilities. The purchase of the vehicle and the fittings were part of the commitment by coal mining company, Kangra, to fully implement its Social and Labour Plan. The ambulance was unveiled during an official handover ceremony held at the Driefontein Community Health Centre.
Ululations and applause broke out as Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Manzini took the ambulance for a short test drive inside the clinic yard after receiving the keys from Kangra General Manager Paul Redelinghuys. Manzini hailed the collaboration between the government and Kangra. “The donated ambulance will contribute immensely to the community of Mkhondo, especially in Driefontein, in that it will reduce the delays in responding to the sick and injured,” said Manzini. Driefontein is over 50 kilometres from Piet Retief Hospital.
Kangra invested R1.2 million to purchase and customise the Volkswagen Crafter in line with the Department of Health’s specifications. Mkhondo Municipality Executive Mayor Ngelosi Ndhlovu was excited about the benefits that would accrue to residents. “The ambulance can penetrate remote or underserved areas, guaranteeing that a greater number of community members receive emergency medical treatment.” Echoing Ndhlovu’s sentiments, Ward Councillor Nosipho Sangweni said a quicker delivery of medical care will give people a better chance at recovery and survival.
During his speech at the handover event, Driefontein forum chairperson Themba said the ambulance was an impactful social project that would uplift the community.
The need for an additional ambulance was identified through extensive consultations with representatives from the various communities and the Mkhondo Local Municipality. Kangra’s team started the process of procuring the ambulance in July 2024. “The company views its role in supporting the community as a holistic commitment to fostering sustainable development and improving the quality of life for residents beyond its mining operations,” remarked Redelinghuys.
