Gold and base metals miner First Quantum Minerals had advised that its Zambian subsidiary Kansanshi Mining has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Zambian water utility the North Western Water Supply and Sanitation Company (NWWSSC) for the provision of piped water to the Mushitala community.

The Mushitala community is located on the Old Congo road in the Solwezi district where the Kansanshi mine is based.

As part of the MoU, the mine has pledged to provide a grant of ZK6.6-million to the NWWSSC in the form of both material and financial support.

In return, the NWWSSC will be responsible for planning and implementing the project, which will provide piped water to more than 150 households and public facilities within the next three months.

Through the grant, Kansanshi aims to create a conducive environment for the surrounding community to operate and function, as clean water is a priority for social development.

The miner believes improved and sustainable water supply will significantly enhance the community’s economic growth.
