Polymetals says Endeavor mine to restart following fatal incident

ASX-listed Polymetals Resources on Friday said it would restart operations at the Endeavor silver/zinc mine, in New South Wales, in stages following a fatal underground incident earlier this week that claimed the lives of two workers.

The company confirmed that mining and surface operations were suspended immediately after the incident, which occurred at about 03:00 AEDT on October 28, about 700 m underground. Early information suggests the accident happened during the preparation of a secondary detonation as part of shotfiring activities.

The two workers who lost their lives have been named as Patrick “Ambrose” McMullen (59), a mining shift supervisor, and Holly Clarke (24), a charge-up operator. Both were qualified shotfirers. Another member of the mining team, MacKenzie Stirling, is recovering at home.

Polymetals executive chairperson Dave Sproule said the company was devastated by the incident. “Words fall short of how deeply affected the Polymetals family is by this tragic incident,” he said. “We’re devastated by what has happened and share our deepest thoughts and condolences with the families, their friends and our colleagues. We are doing everything we can to support those affected.”

Sproule said the safety and well-being of employees remained the company’s highest priority and that Polymetals was cooperating fully with the New South Wales Resources Regulator and other authorities investigating the cause of the accident.

While investigations continue, Polymetals said it planned to gradually restart operations in the coming week. Exploration drilling and concentrate transport were expected to resume first, along with the completion of statutory electrical works.

Personnel would begin returning to work from November 5, with mining and processing to restart progressively thereafter. The company said counselling and support services would remain in place for employees during the transition.
