Swedish engineering group Sandvik has secured its largest-ever order for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), with ASX- and JSE-listed South32 selecting the company to supply a fleet of underground mining equipment for the Hermosa critical minerals project in Arizona, US.

Valued at about SEK750-million, the order was booked in the second quarter of 2025 and includes a mix of battery-electric and conventional underground mining equipment. Deliveries are scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2026 and continue through to 2030, with the bulk of the equipment to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.

“We're proud that Sandvik BEVs will help contribute to an increased supply of critical minerals, supporting the continued electrification of society. Lower fuel expenses and maintenance costs coupled with longer equipment lifespan will enable a more efficient, economical and sustainable mining operation at Hermosa,” said Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions president Mats Eriksson.

The order includes battery-electric trucks, loaders, bolters, development drills and longhole drills, alongside conventional trucks, cable bolters, loaders and longhole drills.

Hermosa is South32’s flagship US project and is currently the only advanced mine development in the country positioned to produce two federally designated critical minerals — manganese and zinc. The company is targeting first production from the zinc/lead/silver deposit in 2027, with plans to establish Hermosa as a multi-decade operation.
