SEW-EURODRIVE powering mining performance through partnerships, efficiency and local capability
Strong demand across Africa’s mining sector has underpinned a standout year for drive and automation specialist SEW-EURODRIVE, highlighting the growing importance of reliable, efficient and locally supported technology. These themes were explored when Mining Weekly interviewed SEW-EURODRIVE national sales and marketing manager Jonathan McKey at the company’s stand during the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town on Monday, February 9.
McKey reflected on the factors behind SEW-EURODRIVE’s milestone performance across copper, coal, platinum and gold projects, including close collaboration with customers and partners across the mining value chain. He discussed how working alongside original-equipment manufacturers; engineering, procurement and construction management contractors; and mine operators from feasibility through to commissioning helps to ensure correctly specified, life-of-mine drive solutions that deliver long-term reliability.
The discussion also focused on how SEW-EURODRIVE is responding to mines’ priorities around energy efficiency and reduced downtime. McKey outlined how evolving drive technology, on-site energy surveys and predictive maintenance tools such as DriveRadar are supporting improved performance and availability.
Training and skills development was another key theme, with McKey explaining the role of the company’s Drive Academy in upskilling artisans, engineers and SEW-EURODRIVE’s own teams. He also highlighted the company’s expanded local manufacturing, increased stockholding and advanced repair capabilities, and how these investments are improving responsiveness, turnaround times and long-term value for mining customers across Africa.
