South Africa's mining output down 1.4% y/y in July

South Africa's mining production decreased by 1.4% year-on-year in July, Statistics South Africa reports.

The largest negative contributors were iron-ore (-19% and contributing -2.8 percentage points); ‘other’ metallic minerals (-36.2% and contributing -1.1 percentage points); and gold (-3.5% and contributing -0.5 of a percentage point).

Manganese ore (27% and contributing two percentage points) and chromium ore (23.3% and contributing one percentage point) were the largest positive contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 0.9% month-on-month in July. This followed month-on-month changes of -1.7% in June and -0.9% in May.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 2.5% in the three months ended July, compared with the previous three months. The largest negative contributors were platinum group metals, or PGMs (-4.8% and contributing -1.3 percentage points); iron-ore (-9.5% and contributing -1.2 percentage points); and gold (-3.9% and contributing -0.5 of a percentage point).

Manganese ore (12.9% and contributing one percentage point) was the largest positive contributor.

Mineral sales, meanwhile, increased by 24.5% year-on-year in July, with the largest positive contributors being gold (117.5% and contributing 19.3 percentage points); manganese ore (70.8% and contributing 4.1 percentage points); PGMs (16.3% and contributing 3.3 percentage points) and coal (13.3% and contributing 3.1 percentage points).

Iron-ore (-31.4% and contributing -4.4 percentage points) and ‘other’ non-metallic minerals (-36.5% and contributing -1.3 percentage points) were the largest negative contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 0.1% in July compared with June. This followed month-on-month changes of 19.5% in June and -7.5% in May.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 9.6% in the three months ended July, compared with the previous three months.
