New community healthcare clinic
Globally diversified mining and metals company South32 on January 30 celebrated the official opening of the Sicelo Clinic in Meyerton, Gauteng.
The company says the R4.1-million healthcare facility underscores its ongoing commitment to help support long-term improvements to healthcare access and community wellbeing in the Sicelo township and its surrounds.
The clinic, initially established as a mobile facility to respond to Covid-19 needs, has now been transformed into a fully operational healthcare centre that boasts 12 consulting rooms, public toilets and a medical waste facility.
“We are proud to be part of this critical healthcare development for the Sicelo community. The opening of the Sicelo Clinic is not just a testament to South32’s commitment to improving healthcare, but also to our broader mission of creating sustainable, meaningful change in the communities where we operate,” said South32 South Africa manganese VP of operations Barry Bezuidenhout.
“The clinic will play an important role in enhancing the quality of life for local residents, and we are grateful to our partners for working with us to make this project a reality.”
South32 says it has invested over R100-million in the Sedibeng district of Gauteng over the past decade, supporting a range of projects across healthcare, education and infrastructure.
Notable initiatives include the construction of 20 classrooms at Meyerton High School, the refurbishment of the Sebokeng Paediatric Ward and intensive care unit medical equipment, the Kotulong Community Centre for vulnerable children, as well as other educational efforts.
The Sicelo Clinic is a direct result of collaboration between South32 and several key partners.
Partners include the Midvaal local municipality, which donated the land for the clinic’s construction; the South African Medical and Education Foundation, which provided medical equipment and assisted with the furnishing of the clinic; and the Department of Health, which contributed security infrastructure, including fencing, lighting, cameras and paving.
In addition to South32’s financial contribution, the project has created 14 job opportunities for local community members, aligning with the company’s commitment to supporting local employment and economic development.
