Temporary 21-day export ban only applies to artisanal gemstones, Malawi govt clarifies
Following the February 12 announcement of the placing of a temporary ban on the exports of all minerals from Malawi, the country’s Ministry of Mining has moved to clarify its position.
“The Ministry . . . has embarked on a process of reviewing the valuation framework for gemstones from February 12 and this process will take 21 days. During this period, the Ministry shall not process export licences/permits for gemstones,” it said in a statement issued on February 13.
The Ministry said the decision was taken to “improve overall management and productivity of the artisanal sub sector of the industry”.
ASX- and OTCQX-listed Lotus Resources, which owns an 85% interest in the Kayelekera uranium project in the country, said the Ministry’s statement, along with the company’s communications with the government, confirmed that there was no temporary ban on mineral exports.
“The action relates to the artisanal gemstone sector only and, at this stage, is restricted to the Ministry of Mining not processing export licences/permits for gemstones during a 21-day review process,” Lotus said.
