Trimble to exhibit autonomous machinery, AI at bauma 2025
Construction technology leader Trimble is set to unveil a groundbreaking exhibit at bauma 2025, the Munich-based construction exhibition taking place in April. Trimble will showcase 25 advanced machines at their stand during the exhibition.
Among them are a fully autonomous excavator and compactor, alongside a semi-autonomous compactor. The highlight of their presentation will be the integration of AI and augmented reality, aimed at elevating machine performance to human-operated levels. This initiative underscores Trimble's commitment to bridging the digital and physical realms, enhancing project efficiency and promoting sustainability in construction.
Trimble regional sales manager for Germany, Austria and Switzerland Martin Wagener emphasises the pivotal role of AI in harnessing data collected from past projects. “By leveraging AI insights, Trimble aims to optimise future construction endeavours, integrating external data like weather forecasts to streamline project timelines. The goal is clear: to make construction operations more efficient, precise, environmentally friendly, and economically viable through advanced AI applications,” he tells Engineering News & Mining Weekly.
Discussing broader applications, Wagener highlights the effectiveness of autonomous machinery in sectors such as agriculture and mining, particularly in expansive, open environments. “Despite regulatory challenges in different regions, the potential benefits, including enhanced safety by reducing human exposure to hazardous conditions, remain compelling,” he notes.
Wagener acknowledges that while autonomous machinery offers significant advantages, its applicability varies across construction scenarios. He notes the continued necessity of skilled operators for tasks requiring adaptability and nuanced decision-making. “Trimble's approach integrates machine control systems like Trimble Earthworks, designed to be intuitive and efficient, thus addressing global skilled labour shortages,” he says.
Large-Scale Infrastructure Projects
Trimble's impact extends to large-scale infrastructure projects, exemplified by their successful operations in South Africa and testimonials from satisfied customers, such as in Tanzania. The company's technology not only enhances accuracy and cost-effectiveness but also supports efforts to overcome operator resistance to automation, which is crucial for meeting modern construction demands.
In mining, Trimble's geospatial and monitoring systems play a critical role in ensuring safety and operational efficiency. Wagener highlights their role in monitoring slope stability and emphasises the importance of precise data analytics in optimising mining operations. “Autonomous machinery, coupled with robust geospatial solutions, promises to redefine safety standards while enhancing productivity,” he enthuses.
Looking ahead, Trimble remains committed to advancing construction technology through ongoing collaboration and media engagement. The bauma exhibition serves as a pivotal platform for showcasing their innovations and fostering future partnerships aimed at driving industry progress.
