Upward trend in generative AI adoption
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Security systems and the uptake of new technologies in the mining sector will continue its upward trajectory
Security systems provider Axis Communications has noted a marked increase in the uptake of new security-focused applications based on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), especially in the South African mining sector.
The company, which provides security solutions – including various cameras, access-control solutions and video management software – predicts that the adoption of such ever-evolving technologies should continue its upward trajectory this year.
“The key technological trends which will affect the security sector in 2024 reflect this rapidly evolving environment,” says Axis Communications Africa sales manager Marcel Bruyns.
Although various positive opportunities can be leveraged, they need to be considered alongside challenges that need to be addressed, he adds.
Surveillance systems, the Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics are all converging and being used in new environments to provide more information for users.
“We have seen increased use cases of IoT devices integrated into our products, providing valuable information to improve health and safety, operational efficiencies and overall productivity at mines,” Bruyns points out.
The company reports that there is a growing need for advancements in technology, with many requests for AI and analytics- driven products, ranging from perimeter protection to the monitoring of production systems and processes in mines.
“The incorporation of IoT and sensors has been a valuable addition to our offerings,” Bruyns enthuses.
Privacy, data protection and cybersecurity concerns, according to Axis Communications, are increasing, consequently prompting more questions from potential deployers.
Additionally, from a surveillance standpoint, an increase in the theft of equipment and raw materials is driving an interest in using related technologies more effectively.
Trends
Bruyns identifies five technology trends in the mining and industrial security sector.
The first trend is the potential for generative AI to support clients in new security-focused applications, such as assistance of operators and interactive customer support.
“Its value has already been demonstrated in software development,” he says.
Hybrid architectures, as the new, solution-efficient standard, is the second trend, and will combine on-premises, cloud-based and edge technologies as a new industry standard.
Bruyns says these architectures will continue to develop, serving the customer requirements and not those of vendors.
Progress in safety and security is another development. Safety use-cases are increasing, with more extreme weather, video surveillance and analytics being increasingly used for early warnings of potential disasters and improved rapid response services, he stresses.
Further, regulation will always be a key driver in technology, with AI, cybersecurity and sustainability coming under greater regulatory scrutiny.
This will have a significant impact on security technology development, as there will need to be appropriate collaboration between vendors and end-users to ensure compliance.
Bruyns highlights the importance of a total system perspective, as the fifth trend.
“The impact of every aspect of a security solution will be under increased scrutiny, with vendors and clients needing to monitor, measure and increasingly report on a range of factors, making the total system perspective essential.”
Ringing in New Tech
Axis Communications continues to develop products and solutions that conform to regulations in multiple countries, which is evidenced in its current range of explosionproof cameras, which hold global certifications.
“Globally, there are always changes in security regulations, although these may not be universally adopted,” says Bruyns.
The company continues to innovate and develop its portfolio to provide solutions for different markets and segments globally.
An example of such an innovative development is the launch of two new explosionproof cameras for hazardous areas.
The company also has an open platform for all its products, enabling its technology integration partners to develop their own applications for unique requirements.
“Axis Communications has products featuring onboard analytics to detect humans or vehicles, ensuring safety and security, as well as solutions for personal protective equipment detection and the integration of ground or machinery sensors to monitor the environment and generate alarms or alerts, if needed,” Bruyns concludes.
