Name of the Project
BHP copper smelter and refinery expansion (SRE).

Location
South Australia.

Project Owner/s
Australian multinational mining and metals public company BHP.

Project Description
BHP aims to increase copper production in South Australia to more than 500 000 t/y of refined copper cathode by the early 2030s, and to deliver up to 650 000 t/y from the mid-2030s.

The SRE is expected to proceed in two phases.

Phase 1 involves an upgrade of the existing smelter and refinery at Olympic Dam to a two-stage smelter configuration, with concentrate smelting capacity of between 1.1-million tonnes and 1.4-million tonnes a year, which better suits the asset mineralogy.

The second phase of the expansion would increase capacity to align with potential further growth from Oak Dam and Olympic Dam.
