South Africa's new mining cadastral system, called project Indwe, is currently in the design and development phase and on track for roll-out in June 2025, Department of Mineral Resources and Energy mineral and petroleum regulation deputy director general Tseliso Maqubela pointed out.

During a presentation at the South African Investment Luncheon, hosted as part of the Africa Down Under conference, in Perth, Australia, on September 5, he reiterated that the new cadastre would provide a modern system to enhance the efficiency and transparency in the application, granting and management of mining rights.

With the new system, the department is seeking to improve the quality, accuracy and accessibility of all relevant information; to have an efficient technological platform; to reduce turnaround times in the application and granting processing; and ensuring ease of compliance for the mining industry.

He said the biggest risk pertains to data migration and ensuring existing data is migrated accurately to the new system.

Maqubela, however, assured mining investors that the department was confident of successfully and accurately migrating the data.

“Project Indwe aims to bring transparency and efficiency to the South African mining sector, concurrently elevating the sector to new heights from an investment perspective,” he said.
