The credibility of the Office of the Public Protector rose dramatically during Thuli Madonsela’s tenure. Sadly, it is being severely undermined by her successor, Busisiwe Mkhwebane. Already several of Mkhwebane’s reports have been found wanting, while her approach to the so-called South African Revenue Service’s rogue unit is at best plain wrong and, at worst, an attempt to influence the direction of ongoing factional battles in the African National Congress.
