Empowering women, uplifting each other - the journey of WWN Africa

In the wake of the 2020 pandemic, a group of women from the Weir sales team in Africa came together to create something powerful – a safe and supportive space to uplift, connect and empower one another

What began as a small initiative soon evolved into a broader vision, leading to the official launch of the Weir Women’s Network (WWN) Africa Local Chapter in 2021. Guided by the Global Weir Women’s Network and a resonant local mantra – “To fix my sister’s crown” – the chapter has gone from strength to strength.

Since its inception, WWN Africa has actively championed the development of women within Weir and the broader mining sector. Through virtual connection calls, the GIBS Women in Leadership Programme and the WiMSA Mentorship Programme – run in partnership with the learning and development department – the chapter has focused on personal growth, leadership development and building a strong pipeline of female talent in an industry where women remain under-represented.

WWN Africa also contributes to thought leadership, engaging in strategy sessions and participating in roundtable discussions with the board and executive team. The network is a visible and vocal presence at community and industry events, from school career days and charity drives to Women’s Day celebrations and panel discussions.

Looking ahead, the chapter will continue expanding its reach through new committee members, cross-functional initiatives and continued support of WiMSA-led events. With every initiative, WWN Africa reinforces Weir’s ongoing commitment to driving gender inclusion and uplifting women in mining, making the workplace not just productive but also purposeful and empowering.
