JSE- and NYSE-listed Gold Fields has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Decarbonising Mining Awards 2025 category for ‘Excellence in Decarbonisation Strategy and Implementation by a Mining Company’, sponsored by Stantec.

Gold Fields is one of four finalists for this category, which recognises high achievement and leadership in reducing carbon emissions, specifically, a commitment to an ambitious reduction target and implementation of projects to meet that target.

The company says its investment in decarbonisation across its Australian operations has been significant and is having real impact on reducing emissions.

The company notes that existing renewable-energy infrastructure commissioned since 2019 already supplies 82 MW of power collectively across its Granny Smith, Agnew and Gruyere operations, in Australia, through a combination of solar, wind and battery energy storage solutions.

Gold Fields says switching on the 77 MW wind and solar renewables project at St Ives, in Western Australia, will help accelerate total renewable electricity consumption across Gold Fields’ global business to 25%, almost double that of 2022.

Gold Fields has invested over A$400-million in renewable-energy projects, including the St Ives and Agnew microgrids, significantly cutting emissions and advancing net-zero mining operations.

Other finalists include diversified miner Mineral Resources, which has introduced an internal decarbonisation fund that charges business units for emissions, creating a financial incentive for operational efficiency, funding decarbonisation projects and accelerating the transition to net zero by 2050.

Additionally, iron-ore major Fortescue’s 'Real Zero' strategy commits $6.2-billion to eliminating fossil fuels from its iron-ore operations by 2030, replacing nearly 1 000 diesel-powered machines with zero-emission alternatives, and investing in large-scale renewables infrastructure.

Moreover, gold company Bellevue Gold is implementing a decarbonisation strategy aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2026, with measures including an 80% renewable energy power station and efforts to produce 'green gold'.

Separately, Gold Fields global energy lead James Koerting has been nominated as a finalist in the Mining Decarbonisation Champion category of the same awards, which are being presented in Perth, Australia, next month.

Winners will be announced on May 6 at The Decarbonising Mining Awards as part of The Decarbonising Mine – the ninth annual Energy and Mines Australia Summit, taking place from May 6 to 7, at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Center.
