Kenya’s industrial and building sectors are entering an exciting phase, undoubtedly driven, in part, of the advent of digital technologies and AI.  Indeed, the  recently introduced National Intelligence Strategy aims to position Kenya as a regional leader in AI adoption.

This is strategy is also aligned with Vision 2030, the ICT Masterplan (2022–2032), and the African Union Agenda 2063, all of which emphasise tech-driven economic growth which foster innovation, improve service delivery, and enhance competitiveness across sectors.

It is also the above that makes a pertinent case for industry collaboration with OEMs and technology providers which will assist organisations in developing customised digital roadmaps that identify key priorities while ensuring scalability and long-term sustainability.

For example, Schneider Electric’s vendor-agnostic IoT architecture, EcoStruxure is already helping Kenyan businesses integrate real-time insights, simulation capabilities, and unified management tools in their daily operations,

These advancements enable leaders to better manage energy, streamline operations, and make data-driven decisions. What was once considered futuristic—predictive maintenance, digital twins, and augmented reality training—is now a reality.

Digital factories are on the rise

One area of rapid progress is the concept of the digital factories.  This approach allows factories to run simulations, predict disruptions, and optimise deployment strategies before issues occur. Already deployed globally, the model is being introduced in Kenya to help manufacturers manage operations with agility and confidence.

Through augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), operational knowledge can now be codified and digitised. For young engineers and technicians, this shortens training time and bridges the gap between experienced professionals and the incoming workforce.

Imagine a new recruit able to follow step-by-step AR instructions to operate and maintain complex machinery from day one—this is no longer aspirational but happening today.

Preparing the next generation

Kenya’s youthful population youthful population is undoubtedly one of its greatest assets. By 2035, Africa will have the  largest annual workforce entrants, more than any other region, with East Africa contributing a significant share.

However, the region must address the dual challenge of an experienced yet ageing workforce alongside a new generation eager to enter industries with little on-the-job experience.

Digital tools are revolutionising vocational training by making it more accessible and cost-effective. A great example is Toolkit in Nairobi, where VR and AR welding equipment have transformed the learning experience.

In the past, students needed large amounts of materials for hands-on practice, which made training expensive and limited opportunities. Today, similar innovations are available through Schneider Electric as part of our Industry 4.0 commitment. This includes our XROA software solution, recently introduced at PC Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute, offering immersive, interactive learning for the next generation of technicians.

This approach not only lowers training expenses but also ensures that graduates are job-ready, helping industries absorb young talent more effectively.

Beyond the factory floor

The benefits of digitalisation extend across supply chains and business models. With enhanced operational visibility and centralised data management, companies are achieving leaner, more resilient supply chains. In parallel, digital tools are encouraging innovation in business models—opening opportunities for service-based offerings, greater customer engagement, and new revenue streams.

Adopting these technologies is not without hurdles. Infrastructure investments and workforce upskilling remain essential. But through strategic partnerships, targeted training initiatives, and collaboration between governments, OEMs, and businesses, Kenya is laying the foundation for a thriving digital economy.

Ultimately, the convergence of digital transformation and AI is more than a technological shift—it is a catalyst for sustainable growth, resilience, and competitiveness.
