Kodal readies Bougouni site for first exports of stockpiled spodumene concentrate
While Aim-listed Kodal Minerals continues to finalise the requirements for an export permit in Mali, large stockpiles of spodumene concentrate are mounting on site at its Bougouni lithium project.
The company’s 49%-owned local subsidiary Les Mines de Lithium de Bougouni is progressing openpit mining and processing at its Stage 1 dense media separation plant.
Kodal CEO Bernard Aylward confirms that improvements to the processing plant are ongoing and that spodumene concentrate production currently exceeds 45 000 t of product available for export.
He warns that some lower levels of the Ngoualana openpit are currently restricting owing to heavy rainfall and excess water in the pit, but pumping is ongoing and access is expected to be restored soon.
The team on site continues to remove overburden and weathered material to the final pit outline.
Aylward notes that mining operations have also been impacted on by delays in the delivery of explosives, but this is expected to the remedied shortly.
In respect of the permit, Mali’s Mines Minister Professor Amadou Keita and Bougouni’s regional governor Ousmane Wele conducted a site visit last week with positive feedback having been provided.
Kodal’s team on site emphasised to the delegation the need for the export permit to be issued as soon as possible, owing to the significant volume of spodumene concentrate that is available for immediate shipment with storage space running out.
Meanwhile, the project team is advancing site preparations for first export and engagements with the ports of Abidjan and San Pedro, in Côte d’Ivoire, to ensure readiness for the first shipment.
