Metallium wins US defence contract to advance gallium recovery
ASX- and OTCQX-listed Metallium has secured its first direct contract with the US Department of Defense (DoD), marking a formal entry into the Pentagon’s innovation and funding system.
The company’s US subsidiary, Flash Metals Texas, has been awarded a Phase 1 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract through the Defense Logistics Agency. The six-month programme will use Metallium’s proprietary Flash Joule Heating technology to recover gallium from waste streams, including LED scrap. The technology also holds potential for germanium and other high-value metals.
Phase 1 funding of about A$100 000 establishes Metallium’s eligibility for US federal grant programmes. Successful completion would position the company to apply for Phase 2 funding of up to $1-million to support pilot-scale deployment at its Chambers County site in Texas, and subsequently Phase 3 contracts valued at between $10-million and $100-million for full commercial implementation.
Metallium MD and CEO Michael Walshe described the award as a milestone for the company.
“More than the initial dollar value, it signals our formal entry into the DoD system and follows the proven SBIR pathway that has enabled other ASX companies to progress from Phase 1 to substantial multiyear, multimillion-dollar contracts.
“By demonstrating our technology for gallium recovery, we are building US-based solutions that reduce reliance on foreign supply chains and directly support national security priorities,” he added.
Gallium is classified as a critical mineral by the US government owing to its use in defence applications, semiconductors, and communications. Supply is currently dominated by non-allied nations, which the DoD views as a national security risk.
