MinRes halts road haul ops after truck crash

The share price of Western Australian miner Mineral Resources (MinRes) fell on Wednesday, after the company reported a crash on its Onslow iron-ore haul road.

MinRes said authorities have closed the road after a crash on Monday in which two trailers of a road train had tipped onto their side. The prime mover and first trailer remained upright and the operator was not injured.

The miner said that haulage was continuing through contractor vehicles using alternative routes and that transhippers would continue to load ocean-going vessels.

MinRes did not expect its iron-ore volume guidance for the 2025 financial year to be impacted by the haulage setback.

According to the Australian Financial Review, this was the sixth road crash on the Onslow network, raising questions over the safety and design of the 150-km road that was completed in October last year.

Issues relating to the spray seal and binder are most prevalent, impacted by high temperatures, water and load, which with the occurrence of significant flooding events has led to water ingress affecting pavement and basecourse in some sections.

Last month, MinRes revealed that it would spend about A$230-million to repair and resurface the road, with seal binder upgrades, cement stabilisation in certain sections and asphalting across the full length of the haul road under way.

The works would be completed in the first quarter of the 2026 financial year.

“The Onslow haul road, it’s the most substantial heavy haul road that’s ever been built in the world,” MD Chris Ellison said in a recent conference call.

MinRes’ stock traded nearly 4% lower at A$23.88 a share on Wednesday.
