ONE GIANT LEAP

Fifty years ago on July 20, 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the fist human beings to leave their footprints on the lunar surface, while fellow astronaut Michael Collins continued to orbit the Moon in the Apollo 11 command module. Four days earlier, on July 16, 1969, the astronauts lifted off from Launch Pad 39A at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (Nasa’s) Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. The Nasa-supplied photo above was taken by Armstrong and shows Aldrin looking back at Apollo 11’s lunar module, known as Eagle, after having deployed the ‘Early Apollo Scientific Experiments Package’.
