Sustainable solutions for the beverage industry

Label and packaging specialists CCL Label will showcase the latest additions to its Sustainable Label range – Low-Temperature WashOff, Low-Temperature EcoStream, and EcoFloat WHITE – at the Propak Africa trade showcase.

The show will be held at the Nasrec Johannesburg Expo Centre, in Johannesburg, from March 11 to 14 this year.

CCL Label’s latest products are designed to enhance the sustainability of the beverage industry by improving recycling efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of packaging.

The Low-Temperature WashOff is an advanced label designed to detach from packaging without leaving residue, even at low temperatures, and is particularly beneficial for beverage packaging, where traditional labels can be challenging to remove.

By detaching easily at lower temperatures, this label significantly reduces energy consumption during the cleaning process and extends its application beyond glass bottles to refillable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

Further, it releases no substances during washing, minimising the environmental impact from inks and adhesives. As a result, washing water remains cleaner for longer, reducing the frequency of water changes and further enhancing the process sustainability.

“Low-Temperature WashOff is both an economic and ecological solution that aligns with modern businesses’ sustainability goals,” says CCL Label.

Similar to Low-Temperature WashOff, the Low-Temperature EcoStream label ensures residue-free detachment from packaging at low temperatures. However, it is specifically designed for PET recycling, addressing the challenges posed by conventional labels that can impair the recycled PET’s quality, if not fully removed.

The low-density label separates from PET during the sink-float process, making recycling more efficient and reducing energy requirements.

The EcoFloat WHITE is a sleeve label designed for light-sensitive products. Traditionally, white high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers are used for light-sensitive products, however recycling these containers is challenging, often resulting in recycled material being unsuitable for new food packaging.

EcoFloat WHITE enables the transition from white HDPE to transparent PET containers as it provides the necessary light protection while making the containers easier to recycle. Transparent PET is more frequently recycled into new food packaging, enhancing the sustainability of the packaging lifecycle, CCL Label explains.

Additionally, EcoFloat WHITE offers design flexibility, allowing customisation in various colours without compromising on recyclability. This enables brands to maintain attractive packaging while upholding environmental responsibility.

CCL Label has also introduced the latest in its flexible packaging with the CCL Specialty Pouches which are made from mono-material for enhanced recyclability.

Flexible packaging is gaining popularity owing to its lightweight properties, reduced packaging volume, and extended product shelf life, says CCL Label.

A key feature of these pouches is the integration of radio-frequency identification chips, enabling smart labelling for intelligent tracking and product monitoring. This technology also allows companies to oversee the entire lifecycle of a product, from manufacturing through to recycling, enabling new possibilities in logistics, inventory management and supply chain transparency.

Lastly, CCL Label offers In-Mould Labels, which directly moulds labels into the container during the manufacturing process. This method eliminates the need for adhesive application, resulting in a label that is highly durable, resistant to wear, and seamlessly integrated with the container.

“In-Mould Labels offer a premium look and feel while being recyclable, making it a sustainable choice for brands aiming to reduce their environmental footprint,” CCL Label concludes.
