A consensus was reached at the China Platinum Jewellery Forum in November 2024 that the jewellery industry needs to strengthen its commitment to innovation, collaboration, environmental stewardship, openness and inclusivity.
Hosted by precious metals marketing organisation Platinum Guild International (PGI), in Shanghai, China, the forum formed part of the World Jewellery Confederation’s (CIBJO’s) 2024 Congress and was attended by Chinese and foreign jewellery industry experts, leaders, authoritative institutions and well-known brand representatives to explore the sustainable development path of China’s platinum jewellery industry.
The delegates advocated leveraging technological innovation to foster new momentum, while promoting cross-industry integration and collaborative advancement across the entire sector.
The forum also saw a call for setting clear standards for responsible production and operations, while participants also highlighted the importance of cultural diversity and talent development in building strength for a sustainable future.
By harnessing technological innovation and application, the PGI says the industry can enhance its efficiency, while embedding more sustainable practices.
Subsequent to the event, the Declaration for Responsible and Sustainability Principles of China’s Platinum Jewellery Industry was jointly signed and witnessed by testing services providers National Gems & Jewellery Testing, and grading and accreditation service providers National Standardisation Technical Committee 256.
The declaration aims to map out future pathways for healthy and high-quality growth toward sustainable development.
Paving the Future
At the forum, the PGI reported that platinum’s unique qualities make it a precious and rare metal with “great strength and durability”, adding that alongside creating remarkable jewellery, platinum’s attributes also benefit society and the environment, such as acting as an important ingredient in automotive catalysts to reduce emissions.
The PGI also emphasises that platinum is a key component of the hydrogen economy, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Platinum, highlighted the PGI, is also used in medical instruments and is a material at the forefront of cancer treatments.
Through various programmes, both direct to consumer and in collaboration with jewellery retailers and manufacturers, PGI creates consumer ounce demand by first identifying opportunities for platinum in jewellery, and then developing them with partners. PGI’s consumer marketing and educational programmes are focused on developing awareness and an appreciation for platinum’s unique qualities as a precious metal for fine jewellery. PGI is a marketing organisation created in 1975 with the vision to develop the global platinum jewellery market as a new demand source for platinum.Comments
