NYSE-listed copper and gold miner Freeport has advised that the five workers it was still searching for at its Grasberg block cave mine, in Indonesia, have been found deceased.

Seven workers went missing following a mud rush incident at the mine on September 8, with a rescue team having conducted search activity.

Two employees were found deceased on September 20, with the search having continued to find the five missing workers.

Grasberg’s mining operations have been suspended since September 8, when a sudden rush of about 800 000 t of wet material entered the mine from the former Grasberg openpit and travelled rapidly to multiple mine levels, including the service level of the mine, where the seven workers were conducting development activities.

Freeport’s subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia is undertaking an investigation into the cause of the incident, which is unprecedented in the company’s multidecade history of block cave mining operations. The company expects the investigation to concluded by the end of the year.

The investigation team includes external experts to provide root cause analysis and recommendations for safeguarding against future occurrences.

In turn, PT Freeport Indonesia is working with government authorities to review the incident and its future operating plans for the Grasberg minerals district.

The company says there may be potential production impacts from the incident and the suspension; however, damage assessments are still in progress.
