Harmony declares a Day of Safety in South Africa after another employee dies
Harmony Gold Mining Company has declared June 5 a Day of Safety across its South Africa operations after a fall-of-ground (FoG) incident at its Joel mine, in the Free State, resulted in the death of an employee.
The company will use the day to engage with its employees and stakeholders and reflect on safety practices at each of its mines.
“We are devastated by another loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of our beloved employee. We are like a family at Harmony; we care deeply about each person. Our safety strategy and culture include both systemic and humanistic factors and controls.
"These controls are designed to avoid incidents, protect our employees and have to be adhered to at all times. No working area will be accessed unless it has been declared safe,” CEO Beyers Nel said in a June 4 statement.
A number of employees have died across Harmony's South African operations this year.
In April, one employee died in a locomotive-related accident at the Moab Khotsong mine, while another died in an incident at the surface operations at the Saaiplaas reclamation camp, in Virginia, in the Free State.
A FoG incident at the company’s Mponeng mine, in February, claimed the lives of two employees, while another five lost their lives in two separate incidents at the Doornkop and Joel mines in the same month.
Trade union the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union has expressed concern about the number of fatalities at Harmony's operations, which according to it stands at 11 for this year.
