High-voltage (HV) battery storage systems are becoming an essential component of South Africa’s renewable-energy strategy, either as standalone battery energy storage systems or integrated with solar installations, says energy equipment and solutions provider Revov.

Addressing local challenges with bespoke solutions and robust support enables the company to “pave the way for a more sustainable and energy-secure future” says co-founder and MD Lance Dickerson.

However, he calls for proactive measures, such as tax breaks, green incentives and carbon credits to encourage businesses to invest in renewable-energy storage systems.

He stresses that these policies are critical for bridging the gap between rising tariffs by State-owned utility Eskom and the declining costs of renewable-energy technologies.

Dickerson anticipates a significant increase in power-as-a-service applications, where businesses pay for energy based on use, in 2025.

This model, coupled with technological advancements in battery storage, positions HV storage as a cost-effective and reliable solution.

For example, HV storage systems play a pivotal role in stabilising the grid and ensuring energy availability during periods when solar and wind power generation is low, and Dickerson envisions a future where decentralised energy systems – such as shared solar installations with communal battery storage – become more prevalent in industrial and residential complexes.

He adds that the South African battery storage market is poised for exponential growth, especially when one considers that a World Bank report projects an increase from 270 MWh in 2020 to 9 700 MWh by 2030 on a base-case scenario, with the potential to reach a demand of 15 000 MWh under optimal conditions.

Tailored Solutions

Unlike imported modular systems that often fail to address South Africa’s specific energy challenges, Revov’s locally assembled batteries are tailored to regional conditions.

Local manufacture also ensures a competitive edge in terms of aftersales support and responsiveness.

Further, while modular systems are essential for scalability, Dickerson explains that many battery suppliers rely on a one-size-fits-all model, which can lead to inefficiencies.

To counter this, Revov provides fully customised, modular solutions.

The company’s bespoke solutions are based on individual business requirements. This ensures that businesses receive systems that are optimised for their unique energy demands, whether they require a simple modular setup or a more complex, long-term solution.
