London-listed Petra Diamonds’ Finsch mine has completed the MacKenzie road upgrade project in Danielskuil, in the Northern Cape.
The project, valued at R6.2-million, was undertaken as part of the mine’s social and labour plan commitments and responds to key priorities in the Kgatelopele local municipality’s integrated development plan.
The project was aimed at improving road safety, access and infrastructure for the Danielskuil community.
The upgrades to MacKenzie road span 800 m and include the installation of 19 speed humps across Johanna van der Merwe, Landbou, Pela and Tau streets.
Petra says these traffic-calming measures are aimed at enhancing safety and reducing traffic hazards in the area, aligning with its commitment to fostering safer communities and supporting sustainable development in the regions where it operates.
“At Petra, we believe in creating abundance from rarity. This road upgrade and installation of safety measures reflect our dedication to transforming the communities we serve, contributing to the long-term prosperity of Danielskuil.
“Safety is paramount in our operations and community initiatives, and we are proud to support infrastructure that will benefit residents for years to come,” says Finsch operations executive Jaison Rajan.
The project also generated 24 temporary employment opportunities, including partnerships with two local subcontractors, which Petra says reinforces the mine’s commitment to local economic empowerment and community involvement.
The handover ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Kgatelopele local municipality Executive Mayor Irene Williams, along with representatives from project partners MVD Kalahari Consulting Engineers and Taanil Construction.
“[Finsch mine] extends gratitude to the Kgatelopele local municipality, project partners and the community for their invaluable support in making this milestone possible. Together, they are paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future in Danielskuil,” says Petra.
