South Africa has all the credentials to develop its own green hydrogen economy

South Africa has all the credentials to develop its own green hydrogen economy in South Africa for South Africa. That is being increasingly acknowledged at business and government level. Green economy generation can be introduced gradually.

From the Thirties to the Fifties, South Africa’s Satmar in Boksburg had a single pump at refuelling stations that provided cheaper local petrol from torbanite. Given Toyota’s keenness on green hydrogen, South Africa could start with a single green hydrogen pump at key refuelling stations along taxi routes.

At the small industrial end, green hydrogen could be produced on sites now using grey hydrogen, a hellish pollutant. Globally recognised pump manufacturer Wilo is using solar power and water to produce green hydrogen that can be stored for a minute or a year plus. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
