Last month’s EU-South Africa Summit in Cape Town was a real eye-opener. It showed the depth of insight that Europe has in South Africa’s platinum group metals (PGMs) endowment, the ability of our PGMs to catalyse a new green hydrogen universe, our superior sun and prime wind, as well as our supply chain capability. With these words, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen outlined South Africa’s position very well indeed: “You have clean energy in abundance, from wind to sun. You have raw materials that are critical for electrolysers, including 91% of the world’s PGM reserves, and you have a rising industry to produce clean hydrogen and strong export ambitions.” Very generously, Von der Leyen’s extremely far-sighted comment is accompanied by a R94-billion investment package. South Africans needs to get cracking immediately, and must communicate every forward step that we take in helping Europe, Africa and ourselves to go green.
