South Africa must return to having competitive power and logistics

For a South African company to build a ferromanganese smelter in another country is a clear reflection of how the country’s power became so expensive that it was better to beneficiate our manganese outside of the country. Not being able to add value to our own metals and minerals domestically is also a measure of how shockingly State power and State logistics were mismanaged.

Now is the time to reverse all that because still available, for example, is considerable infrastructure on care-and-maintenance in the ferroalloys business that can be returned relatively quickly and infused with new technology. At the same time Transnet’s new approach must ensure that rail and port logistics is made competitive to ensure that the value added domestically can once again be gained on the export markets of the world.
