NO TARIFF: There was some confusion earlier this month when US Customs and Border Protection indicated that country-specific import tariffs might be placed on gold bullion bars. However, President Donald Trump, who is a fan of the precious metal, responded days later on social media as follows: “Gold will not be Tariffed!”. Reuters report that the tariff would have been especially harmful for Switzerland, a major refining and transit hub. Photograph: Bloomberg

OUTPUT RISE: South Africa's miningproduction increased by 0.2% year-on-year in May, with iron-ore, pictured, having made the largest positive contribution, with production increasing by 12.5% year-on-year. The result was mixed, however, with manganese ore output decreasing by 13% year-on-year and coal by 4.6%. Nevertheless, the overall increase was ahead of expectations, following April’s marked 7.7% year-on-year contraction. Photograph: Creamer Media

GREEN SHOOTS: The poor performance of South Africa’s port operations is well documented. Besides periods of embarrassing congestion, the lack of equipment, skills and systems also lies at the heart of the country’s high logistics costs and weak growth. There are some signs of a recovery, however, even ahead of any major private investment. In May 2025, Transnet Port Terminals exceeded its targets for the arrival, berthing and departure of vessels across three of its five container terminals.

The Joburg skyline remains an iconic representation of urban South Africa. Up close, however, crime and decay are inescapable realities, as is the case in most of the country’s other metropolitan areas. Rejuvenation efforts have been tried with varying degrees of success, with the Gauteng Urban Upgrade Programme the latest effort to be listed as a priority project. Long-term success hinges, however, on far better financial management, without which infrastructure can’t be built and maintained.

TOXIC: Years of raw sewage spilling into Kamfers Dam, near Kimberley, have rendered the water so toxic that lesser flamingos, which previously congregated in large enough numbers to breed, have abandoned the site. Reuters reports that there were no flamingos at the artificial dam when it visited in May. By contrast, footage taken in May 2020 shows a dam flamboyant pink with flamingos. Belatedly, a court order has been secured ordering the municipality to fix the problem. Photograph: Reuters

DON’T BLAME CANADA: Few could ever have imagined the satirical South Park song ‘Blame Canada’ becoming a real political mantra. But US President Donald Trump is blaming his northern neighbour for Fentanyl deaths and is retaliating with on-again, off-again tariffs. New governing Liberal Party leader Mark Carney is having none of it: “Donald Trump has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, on what we sell, on how we earn a living. He’s attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We can’t let him succeed and we won’t.” Photograph: Bloomberg

LOOMING LARGE: The narrow passing by Congress last month a resolution backing President Donald Trump’s tax cuts was a milestone in translating his agenda into implementable legislation. There is a long way to go, however, as the budget resolution is only the first of many deadlines facing lawmakers in approving the $4.5-trillion tax-cut plan, which will require painful spending cuts to make any fiscal sense.
