Amid an industry-wide shift towards more sustainable mining practices, engineering consultancy SRK Consulting says that the significance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in mining has evolved over the past few decades from basic monitoring, to now include a wide range of complex aspects such as biodiversity preservation and water stewardship.

The firm’s guidance, through increasingly complex regulatory and environmental landscapes, has enabled it to provide services in mining, hydrology, geology and environmental and social sciences, which MD Andrew van Zyl says “indicates a trend towards the interconnectedness of these disciplines”.

SRK Consulting’s approach has notably adapted to these evolving needs, incorporating these new factors into the core of its technical decision-making processes, thereby reflecting a broader contextual awareness within the industry, he adds.

“Understanding and integrating ESG factors into our projects is no longer optional, but a critical component of modern mining practice. This shift reflects a broader trend towards sustainable development within the global mining industry,” he tells Mining Weekly.

SRK Consulting’s guidance and advisory role is increasingly vital as mining companies face structural changes or consolidation, which can result in a dilution of specific expertise. Here, Van Zyl explains that SRK provides targeted support by leveraging its specialised expertise and experience across diverse operating conditions.

This support is crucial in ensuring that mining operations do not suffer from a lack of in-depth knowledge in critical areas, he notes, adding that the company prides itself on its historical continuity and deep familiarity with, especially, African mining projects.

However, unlike internal teams that may experience frequent changes, SRK’s team of consultants often oversee projects over extended periods. This long-term involvement grants SRK a unique institutional memory and perspective, enabling the firm to offer insightful, evidence-based solutions, highlights Van Zyl.

Changing with the Times

As the industry braces for future challenges, he explains that SRK is actively preparing to assist mining companies in navigating new regulations and implementing best practices.

Specifically, the emergence of standards, such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and new approaches, like water stewardship, exemplify the new benchmarks being set to manage risks related to mine tailings.

“New regulations, like GISTM, are setting higher benchmarks for safety and sustainability,” notes Van Zyl, adding that “SRK is poised to help clients meet these standards, leveraging the company’s deep industry knowledge and technical expertise”.

Further, the drive towards decarbonisation within the mining industry reflects in SRK’s advisory services, which support companies in measuring carbon footprints, embracing responsible sourcing and adhering to sustainability standards.

Initiatives such as the Responsible Gold Standard, Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance and the Copper Mark, as well as criteria for responsible sourcing of critical minerals, are part of this broader push towards environmental responsibility and transparency.

SRK is also enhancing its technical capabilities to meet these evolving demands. The adoption of advanced data collection technologies, including sensors and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, facilitates real-time monitoring and data analysis, notes Van Zyl.

This capability enables SRK to provide timely and accurate insights, from predictive maintenance strategies to geological analysis, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

Advances in data collection, bandwidth and data processing power have also created opportunities to gain new and deeper insights, he adds.

SRK Consulting also maintains oversight in regulatory compliance, helping its clients adhere to the stringent requirements established by global entities, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the London Stock Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

The firm’s expertise in generating comprehensive technical reports plays a crucial role in navigating these complex regulatory environments, states Van Zyl, adding that by integrating sustainable practices across all disciplines and staying current with emerging trends, SRK Consulting prepares clients for present challenges and equips them for future opportunities.

“The way forward in mining involves a proactive approach to sustainability, compliance and community engagement. At SRK, we are committed to leading the charge, providing solutions that not only meet but exceed the evolving standards of our industry,” concludes Van Zyl.
