Mineral sands company Image Resources has cleared the final construction approvals for its Atlas project, north of Perth, with water licences being issued.

The company started roadwork and civil construction on a temporary 5C water abstraction licence, however, the receipt of the full licences for abstraction and mine dewatering will accelerate construction and mine development rapidly.

“Although Atlas is still in the early stages of construction, we are already seeing the same high-quality project delivery that we achieved with the Boonanarring project in 2018. The Atlas mining camp has been completed on time, on budget, and, most importantly, without any injuries.

“Our priority remains safety, but we are also looking for opportunities to streamline and shorten a typical six- to eight-month construction timeline through efficient planning and execution,” said MD and CEO Patrick Mutz.

Image aims to be in full production at Atlas, located 100 km north of Boonanarring, in the half-year ended June 30, 2025.

At Atlas, production of about 210 000 t/y of heavy minerals concentrate for 711 000 t/y is envisaged over the life-of-mine. The project has a resource of 18.1-million tonnes at 6% heavy mineral, with a mineral assemblage that includes 9.3% zircon, 46% ilmenite, 4% leucoxene and 6.5% rutile. Mineral reserves are estimated at 9.5-million tonnes at 8.1% heavy mineral, with a mineral assemblage that includes 10.6% zircon, 51% ilmenite, 4.5% leucoxene and 7.5% rutile.
