Multinational automotive company Tata Motors’ Ultra new-generation smart truck range, launched in February in South Africa, aims to address the diverse needs of fleet owners across a variety of conventional and specialist logistics.

The trucks are available in the Ultra T.9 and Ultra T.14 models, and are designed for applications in fast-moving consumer goods, agriculture and construction.

They provide solutions tailored to the specific requirements and operational conditions of the local market, says Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles international business head Anurag Mehrotra.

Equipped with features to ensure high productivity and efficiency, both models offer “best-in-class” power, torque and fuel efficiency, resulting in lower total cost of ownership.

The Ultra T.9 boasts a 3.3 ℓ turbocharged diesel engine that generates maximum output of 114 kW at 2 600 rpm and maximum torque of 450 Nm. Built “ruggedly” for tough terrains, it is equipped with a six-speed synchromesh gearbox for a comfortable driving experience and higher efficiency.

The Ultra T.14 is powered by a 5 ℓ turbocharged diesel engine that delivers maximum power of 132 kW at 2 400 rpm and torque of 590 Nm. The truck features a six- speed synchromesh gearbox for assured comfort and higher fuel efficiency.

Safety is further enhanced with dual-circuit full-air S-Cam brakes with antilock braking and robust suspension systems, including parabolic springs and semi-elliptical leaf springs with telescopic double-acting shock absorbers to ensure a smooth and comfortable drive.

“Designed to handle heavy loads across long distances and challenging terrains, these offer fuel efficiency and power optimisation for South Africa’s road infrastructure and higher speed norms,” says Mehrotra.

The range also prioritises driver comfort and safety through its walk-through cabin, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, power steering, dashboard-mounted gear lever, booster-assisted clutch and mechanically suspended seats.

“Overall, the Tata Ultra range is meticulously crafted for comfort and convenience,” he asserts.

The vehicles are available in varied cargo deck configurations that make them an ideal choice for numerous applications.

With the integration of Tata Motors’ flagship connected vehicle system Fleet Edge, fleet owners can monitor vehicle and driver performance in real time, consequently allowing for the monitoring of driving patterns, potential fuel theft and overall vehicle use, ensuring optimal fleet management.

This assists in ensuring minimal downtime while promoting eco-friendly driving habits such as smooth acceleration, optimal speed and reduced idling. These systems help further enhance fuel efficiency and minimise emissions, Mehrotra adds.

Tata Motors also offers a robust aftersales network, with 90 touchpoints across South Africa. Customers benefit from Tata Motors’ vehicle life-cycle management, which provides a warranty of five years or 500 000 km.

Additionally, value-added services, such as its scheduled services package and yearly maintenance contract, provide customers with flexible support options tailored to their preferences and requirements.

To ensure that its innovations align with the evolving demands of customers, Tata Motors is committed to evolve its offerings based on customer feedback and market surveys, Mehrotra asserts.

Tata Motors plans to expand the Ultra range to other markets in sub-Saharan Africa.

“We will continue to actively monitor customer needs and market requirements in these regions to ensure that our expansion is timely and aligns with local demands. This strategic approach will allow us to extend our trusted and reliable vehicle solutions across the region when the conditions are most favourable,” Mehrotra concludes.
