South Africa’s mining supply chain took a confident step onto the global stage as members of the South African Mineral Processing Equipment Cluster (SAMPEC) and the Mining Equipment Manufacturers of South Africa (MEMSA) participated in PERUMIN 2025, one of Latin America’s most influential mining conventions.

The delegation, comprising Consulmet, Bird Machines and Roytec Global, represented just some of the depth and capability of South Africa’s mining technology, equipment, and service sectors, demonstrated world-class innovation across mineral processing, mining engineering solutions, and advanced manufacturing. Their presence reinforced South Africa’s reputation as a competitive and collaborative partner to the Peruvian and broader Latin American mining industries.

A significant highlight of the programme was the exclusive opportunity for members to present to the Mining Engineering Chapter of the Colegio de Ingenieros del Perú (CIP Lima). This engagement enabled South African companies to showcase technical expertise, exchange knowledge with Peruvian industry leaders, and explore opportunities for collaboration in mineral processing, local value chain development, and operational efficiency.

The meeting was attended by Eng. CIP Jorge Soto, president of the Lima CIP Chapter, accompanied by Eng. CIP Juan José Quiroga, secretary of the Mining Engineering Chapter of CIP Lima, and Eng. CIP José Terrones, deputy secretary of the Mining Engineering Chapter of CIP Lima, together with the members of the Board of Directors. (image)

The success of this mission was made possible through strong institutional partnerships. SAMPEC, working closely with the South African–Peruvian Chamber of Commerce (SAPCHAM), played a central role in coordinating business engagements, facilitating introductions, and ensuring a strong industry-to-industry interface. Their combined efforts helped open new pathways for South African companies seeking to grow their footprint in the dynamic Peruvian mining market.

The delegation also benefitted from the support of the South African Ambassador to Chile, whose office provided diplomatic guidance, strategic connections, and on-the-ground assistance throughout the mission. This collaboration ensured that South Africa’s presence at PERUMIN was not only visible but impactful.

“Perumin 37 attendance was excellent, and it remains one of the best exhibitions for showcasing the latest mining technology and equipment. The SAMPEC stand offered the opportunity to have a base from where the exhibition could be explored.

According to MD, Mr Alwyn van Biljon, “Bird Machines had good interactions with international suppliers and potential customers, and we used the opportunity to appoint a local representative in Peru. We excited for the prospect of future business in Peru,”

PERUMIN 2025 has set the stage for deeper commercial partnerships, technical cooperation, and enhanced bilateral engagement between the South African and Peruvian mining sectors. The mission reflects a shared commitment to strengthening global linkages and unlocking new opportunities for both regions’ mining value chains.

SAMPEC is a not-for-profit, industry-led cluster representing the full value chain of South Africa’s local minerals processing sector. This includes consulting engineers, EPCM firms, equipment and component manufacturers, materials handling and logistics providers, and related services.

Established during Electra Mining Africa in September 2014, SAMPEC collaborates with diverse stakeholders to enhance opportunities for local suppliers in the South African mining sector. By fostering economies-of-scale, it strengthens its members’ global competitiveness. SAMPEC promotes the global development of innovative technologies in minerals processing and beneficiation.

Its focus is on fostering a safer, more sustainable, and environmentally responsible industry. Cross-sector collaboration with government, industry associations, state-owned enterprises, financial institutions, and research organisations ensures alignment with national policies. This unified approach benefits not only mining and minerals processing but also the broader South African industrial landscape.
