Energy planning, execution and delivery are long-term pursuits, and those in position now must be given space to finish the job. The current batch of energy executives are having to deal with inadequacies that were set in motion by those who came before then.

Those in charge now are not only very acutely aware of what is needed to improve South Africa’s stricken energy position, but they are also displaying the sort of dogged diligence that deserves backing and not sacking. We have been hearing warnings about an upcoming energy shortage for decades.

Problems are steadily being addressed and substantial new energy generation capacity is being built. Going forward, however, we must take early warning signs far more seriously than we did in the past.
