Vivo Energy and Engen Bring Partnership-Led, Tech-Driven Solutions to Mining Indaba
Vivo Energy, through its Engen business in South Africa, will once again showcase its mining solutions at the 2026 Investing in African Mining Indaba, taking place from 9 to12 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), reaffirming its long-standing commitment to the mining sector.
Aligned with the 2026 Mining Indaba theme, "Stronger together: Progress through partnerships", Vivo Energy and Engen's participation reflects the importance of collaboration across the mining value chain - working alongside mining customers, OEMs, technology providers, communities and supply chain stakeholders to support more resilient, efficient and sustainable mining operations.
"Progress in mining is not achieved in isolation," says George Roberts, Executive Vice President (EVP) South for Vivo Energy and Engen CEO. "It is built through strong partnerships across the value chain - between operators, suppliers, technology partners and communities. Together Vivo Energy and Engen bring together fuels, lubricants, technology and on-the-ground expertise to support mining customers in addressing today's operational challenges while building long-term resilience."
Alex Caldwell, Head of Mining at Vivo Energy, adds: "The Mining Indaba provides an important opportunity to demonstrate how our integrated approach across the Vivo Energy Group delivers value to mining operations throughout Africa. By combining local expertise with regional scale and advanced technology solutions, we're able to support our mining partners with reliable, efficient operations that drive sustainable growth."
At this year's Indaba, Vivo Energy and Engen will exhibit at a combined stand, highlighting the group's integrated approach to fuels, lubricants and technology-enabled solutions for the mining sector across Southern Africa.
The Mining Indaba remains a key platform for Engen to engage directly with mining customers, industry stakeholders and partners, and to demonstrate how its technology-led mining solutions, supported by a strong supply chain and on-site capabilities, help address operational complexity, cost pressures and the need for improved asset performance.
"Mining customers operate in demanding environments where equipment uptime, safety and cost control are critical," says Sharveen Maharaj, General Manager: Commercial at Engen. "Our focus is on working in partnership with customers to deliver practical, data-driven solutions that support more informed decision-making and improved operational outcomes."
Technology-enabled solutions supporting collaborative mining operations
A key feature of the Vivo and Engen stand will be a showcase of the innovative VE-CEM (Continuous Equipment Monitoring) technology, allowing visitors to experience and appreciate how AI-enabled Digital Twin technology works in real mining applications.
VE-CEM uses real-time data from equipment electronic control units to monitor asset health and performance across critical systems such as engines, braking, batteries, air intake and after-treatment. By analysing this data continuously, the solution helps predict potential component failures before they occur, enabling proactive maintenance, reduced unplanned downtime and improved fleet availability.
"VE-CEM enables closer alignment between maintenance teams, operations and technical specialists," says Jason Heath, General Manager: Lubricants at Engen. "By combining real-time insights with on-site expertise, mining operations can move from reactive maintenance to a more predictive, planned approach that improves reliability and extends equipment life."
VE-CEM forms part of Engen's broader Fluidlink service suite, developed specifically for mining and other heavy-duty environments. These offerings include lubrication automation, condition monitoring, site lubrication, fuel management systems, predictive maintenance tools and Swiss PIR blasting efficiency technology, all aimed at improving production uptime and operational efficiency.
Group scale and supply chain capability
Vivo Energy and Engen's mining solutions are underpinned by a strong logistics and supply chain footprint across the continent, supported by the former’s pan-African scale and commercial expertise. This enables security of supply, coordinated fuel and lubricant delivery, and consistent on-site technical support, particularly in complex and remote operating environments.
"Our strength lies in how we support customers on the ground," adds Maharaj. "From logistics and fuel management to lubrication expertise and digital tools, we work closely with mining teams to ensure solutions are practical and fit for purpose."
Supporting mining communities through long-term partnerships
Beyond operational support, in South Africa Engen continue to work with mining partners and local stakeholders to invest in communities surrounding mining operations, with a focus on education, skills development and sustainable infrastructure.
This includes ongoing support for matric bootcamps and the provision of textbooks and study guides at Marikana North High School, delivered in partnership with Tharisa Mines over the past three years. The programme supports Grade 12 learners preparing for their final examinations and has contributed to improved academic outcomes.
Engen has also supported the rollout of a 15kW portable solar power system at Marikana North High School, providing reliable, renewable energy to power maths and science laboratories, support uninterrupted teaching and learning, and introduce learners to clean energy technologies.
"These partnerships reflect our belief that long-term progress in mining is closely linked to strong, inclusive communities," says Heath. "By working together with our partners, we aim to create shared value that extends beyond the mine gate."
A practical, long-term partner to the mining sector
Vivo energy and Engen's message at Mining Indaba 2026 centres on partnership - working alongside mining customers to improve efficiency, asset reliability and safety through a combination of technology, technical expertise and a dependable supply chain, supported by the scale of the Vivo Energy Group’s footprint across 28 African countries.
